Records: Kansas Deputy Held Knee on Handcuffed Black Man for 86 Seconds

Court records reveal that Kansas deputy Richard Fatherly kept his knee on the back of Charles Adair, a handcuffed Black detainee, for 86 seconds, leading to his death. Fatherly now faces charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter.

Adair, arrested on minor traffic warrants, was already in poor health with a severe leg infection that required hospital treatment. After being returned to jail, he fell from his wheelchair and was restrained in his cell.

Video shows Fatherly pressing his knee into Adair’s back as he pleaded for help, until he went still. The autopsy ruled his death a homicide caused by mechanical asphyxia.

Civil rights attorneys have demanded release of the video, criticizing why Adair died in custody while jailed for traffic violations, and why the deputy remains free pending trial.
